When nocturna...Depends on the species and location. When nocturnal birds are not calling on their own I will use playback if it is not a location that gets regular traffic from birders. I can toot a good enough Saw-whet that I try that first, but I can't do screech owl, so that's always a tape. Some of the rails will respond to things like clapping, or clucking with your mouth. If taping, rails are easy in that you usually just need to play a single call and they call right back once immediately. A common mistake is to play the rail tapes on a loop, and then you tape right over their quick response.
